    XHTML

eXtensible HyperText Markup Language, a stricter, XML-based version of HTML that requires well-formed code with proper nesting, closing tags, and precise syntax to ensure cross-platform compatibility.

XHTML represents a hybrid between HTML and XML, combining HTML's presentation capabilities with XML's strict structural requirements. Introduced in the early 2000s as a reformulation of HTML 4.0, XHTML requires well-formed code with mandatory closing tags (even for void elements like <img>), proper nesting, lowercase element names, and quoted attributes. These stricter standards were designed to improve cross-platform compatibility, particularly for emerging mobile devices with limited processing power, by ensuring consistent parsing across different browsers and platforms. From an SEO perspective, XHTML's contribution was primarily in promoting cleaner, more standardized code practices that aligned with search engines' parsing preferences. Well-formed markup helps search engine crawlers more efficiently process page content without encountering structural ambiguities. XHTML's emphasis on semantic markup and separation of content from presentation also supported better content accessibility, a factor that has become increasingly important in search algorithms that prioritize user experience. While pure XHTML has declined in usage since the advent of HTML5 (which incorporated many XHTML best practices while relaxing some of its strict requirements), the coding discipline it promoted remains valuable. Modern SEO still benefits from clean, well-structured markup that clearly defines content hierarchy and semantics. Many of XHTML's practices have been incorporated into current HTML5 validation standards and best practices, continuing to influence how developers create web content that is both user and search engine friendly.
